Join us on an adventure exploring barrier island beaches and salt
marshes with a local naturalist. In addition to breathtaking scenery,
you'll discover fascinating creatures such as dolphins and crabs
that make this one of the world's most distinctive ecosystems.
Whether a long-time resident of the coast, or just visiting, you’ll come
away with a better understanding of this area.
Barrier Island/Tidal River Discovery Tours: Your tour begins at
the Bull River Marina and takes you through the serpentine channels
of the salt marsh. While cruising these tidal creeks, dolphins are
found along the way, we will discuss these unique mammals and
their habits. The pontoon excursion boat glides right up to the
remote Williamson Island beach so you can step off without getting
your feet wet. Enjoy a walk on an often deserted beach. Pulling a
trawl net from the boat brings aboard a bounty from the depths;
flounder, shrimp, fish, squid, crabs - who knows what we will catch. A
truly learning experience while exploring coastal Georgia's
environment. Total touring time: 2.5-3 hours.
YOUR GUIDE: Mike Neal has lived in Coastal Georgia for over 12
years. He delights in sharing its unique coastal ecosystem with
others. Mike has studied the coastal environment and the ecosystem
that makes this area so wonderful. He has traveled though out the
world and found that this area in incredible for its rich biodiversity
and beauty. Mike is very involved in local conservation and
education groups. He is a board member of the Tybee Island Marine
Science Center as well as President of the Georgia Nature Based
Tourism Association.
Education Groups: Teachers will receive information about how the
program meets the objectives of the state standards for life science
for their grade. We will work with you to illustrate points that parallel
your curriculum.
